He built his factory in Schaffhausen in 1868 where there was cheap hydro-power of which he took advantage. At first Jones had some technical troubles and some regarding high taxes which led to high loss of capital. He began looking for investors but in the end he was forced to give up the control of his company. Afterwards, a Swiss consortium purchased the shares of IWC and made another American the head of the company, but the improvement wasn't strong enough and the company was bought by one of its stockholders, Johannes Raschenbach-Vogel, and after the introduction of the first watch with digital time indicator the sales increased. This was also the merit of Calibre 52 movement which built new standards in concept and construction. During World War II the company designed the first oversize anti-magnetic pilot's watch, which was followed by Mark X, which had a new in-house movement, Calibre 83. After the war the company kept its name and became famous world-wide. Its sales increased thanks to such specialty watches like Mark IX and Ingenieur - first automatic watch with a soft-iron inner case. The case protected the watch against magnetic fields.
