A.Lange&Sohne Limited Collections

A.Lange&Sohne has attained a singularly impressive stature within the world of high horology brands during its surprisingly short existence as a "reborn" company. Even the most established and insular of the traditional haute horlogerie industry privately praise the achievements of the company. Who is not familiar with its famous lines Lange 1, Langematik, Arkade,1815? Besides them, Lange has a range of special collections.

With the Luna Mundi, Lange presents a pair of watches that correctly display the waxing and waning of the moon as seen on both sides of the equator. The watches are available exclusively in sets of two, and the edition is limited to 101 sets. Connoisseurs of mechanical timepieces had to wait very long for two watches with moon-phase displays that correctly depict the changing face of the Earth's companion as viewed from any latitude: the watches merely need to be switched at the equator crossing. The Luna Mundi/Ursa Major model in white gold shows the moon phases for the Northern Hemisphere while the Luna Mundi/Southern Cross in pink gold correctly reproduces them for the Southern Hemisphere. Both Lange moons emulate the cosmic original very realistically in two respects. They move continuously and not just in sudden increments once or twice a day as in conventional watches. Both watches were available only in sets of two and the edition was limited to 101 sets. These timepieces were manufactured in 2003 and 2004.

For Lange's master watchmakers, the ten-year anniversary of the re-establishment of the manufactory was a welcome occasion to craft the Anniversary Langematik, the exceptional watch with its rare enamel dial. At the same time, it is a Lange signpost that points against the ubiquitous principle of rationalisation to which so many traditional crafts and time-consuming techniques have fallen victim. It takes craftsmanship honed over several centuries and about 30 meticulous steps for an emailleur to create a flawless and authentic enamel dial. Lange's dedication to historic authenticity also embraces seemingly minute details such as the separately imprinted and separately stoved red numeral XII. Blued steel hands with polished "eyes", the classic small seconds hand with the zero-reset feature, and the "chemin-de-fer" style chapter ring round out the face of a timekeeping instrument that builds a credible bridge to the very origins of watchmaking. In keeping with its classic style, the Anniversary Langematik stands out with a precious platinum case. The Anniversary Langematik was crafted as a limited edition of 500 watches in the period from 2000 to 2004.

The first Lange Tourbillon Pour le Merite of the new era incorporates a technically delightful feature never before implemented in a wristwatch quite this way: the going train is driven by a fusee-and-chain transmission. The edition was limited to 50 watches in platinum and 150 in gold. Lange dedicated this unique testimony of watchmaking wizardry to Adolph Lange, the founder of the dynasty, by naming it after the most prestigious German medal of honour. The Pour le Mérite parades a number of fascinating technical details never before seen in a wristwatch as presented here. One of them is the going train drive via fusee and chain. This complicated mechanism optimises the rate accuracy of the watch and is visible through an aperture in the three-quarter plate. A highly sophisticated planetary gearing system keeps the power to the going train steady even while the watch is being wound. The delicate tourbillon mechanism also serves the purpose of improving rate accuracy by offsetting the disruptive effect of gravity. The rotating cage is suspended by two pivots between two diamond endstones. It turns about its own axis once a minute and can be precisely balanced with tiny counterweights. The fascinating movement of the tourbillon cage can be observed not only through an aperture in the dial but also through the sapphire-crystal caseback. All parts of the watch are painstakingly finished by hand, and every surface is decorated. Accordingly, the completion of each of these masterpieces requires several months. The edition of the Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérite was built between 1994 and 1998.

With this watch - it has a moon-phase display computed to remain accurate for 1000 years - Lange pays tribute to one of the most creative members of the dynasty: Emil Lange. The edition of the 1815 Moonphase was limited to 150 watches in platinum and 250 in pink gold. Not many individuals can take credit for advancing the art of precision watchmaking as passionately as Emil Lange. On the occasion of his 150th birthday in 1999, the masters at Lange created this magnum opus to pay tribute to a champion of horology. The moon-phase display is computed so accurately that it deviates only one day from the true synodic lunar orbit in 1000 years, provided the watch runs accurately and without interruption for that long. Because of this extreme precision, the display is not set to the correct date, but instead - with the help of an exact moon-age table - to the correct hour. The solid-silver dial of the horological treasure also deserves attention. Seven gold appliques represent the Big Dipper constellation. Mizar and Alcor are portrayed in the middle of the Big Dipper's handle. Because Alcor is so tiny, the ability to distinguish the two stars was held as a measure of good vision in medieval times. It is a charming detail, not readily visible to others, that delights every proud owner of this timepiece. The 1815 Moonphase was produced from 1999 to 2000.
