IWC Watches - Spitfire Collection - A Combination of Two Legends
Pilots' watches are a tradition of IWC (International Watch Company) - its first pilots' watch was produced in 1936.
The Spitfire was a single-seat fighter used by the RAF (the British air force, best-known for its evolvement in the Battle of Britain and other historic campaigns of World War 2) and numerous Allied countries in World War 2.
Produced by Supermarine aircraft manufacturer, the famous fighter was designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell ((May 20, 1895 - June 11, 1937) who was a brilliant British aerospace engineer, most prominent for his design of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter), who kept on refining his masterwork until his early passing in 1937.
The Spitfire, one of the most remarkable airplanes in the history of aerospace engineering, made its first flight the same year (1936). These two marvels have met again thanks to IWC Watch Company in the new Spitfire pilots' watch collection.
The Spitfire collection is made up of four models: the Chrono-Automatic, the UTC watch with its 2 time zones, the Mark XVI and the new Midsize. Just as the panels on an aircraft are typically affixed to the frame with its rivets, the digits and markings are riveted to the face in the new Spitfire timekeepers.
The marvelous stainless steel watchcase of the new Spitfire Chrono-Automatic with its strong stainless steel buttons has expanded from 39 millimeters to 42 millimeters, giving it even manlier looks. The central screw-down steel back and a screw-in crown assure water resistance up to 196.85 feet. Certainly, the Spitfire collection has a soft iron inner case for protection from harmful magnetic fields. Well, these watches are the best accessories for aspiring Formula 1 drivers. The increased numbers and recessed stopwatch counters give the rhodium-plated (for protection) face of the chronograph a nice 3-dimensional feel. The new hands, whose shape reminds you of propeller blades, are covered with a luminous substance from shaft to tip and guarantee outstanding legibility by day and by night. The 79320 caliber chronograph movement makes the watch a great mechanical timekeeper. It enables the timing of periods of time up to 12 hours and shows the date and day of the week. Functionality, accuracy, and reliability are essential properties of the IWC pilots' watches offering high performance.
