For many years, Girard- Perregaux was perceived primarily as a masculine brand. Following the success of the Vintage 1945 Lady line, however, it has been investing its creative spirit in several quintessentially feminine models, strongly characterised by the Brand's status as a manufactory. After introducing the "F" line, which was fitted with an automatic mechanical movement, it was only natural to follow it up with a ladies' chronograph featuring the Manufactory's own columnwheel movement. In 2004, the Manufactory is honouring women with three new watches of refined elegance: a baguette model - sophisticated and charmingly retro - and two oval Cat's Eye models with a subtle combination of technique and style. Born in 1945 and reintroduced into the Girard-Perregaux collection in 1995, the Vintage 1945 line is as alluring as ever with its strong lines, subtle retro appeal and curved ergonomic case. Girard-Perregaux 's museum since 1999 housed in the Villa Marguerite, exhibits many of the most important types of watches in the history of the industry in general and in the Brand's history in particular. One of these is a superb rectangular piece created in 1945 and reproduced in a limited series in 1995. Called the Vintage 1945, this model enjoyed such international acclaim that Girard-Perregaux has since then used it in its Lady line, in an automatic column-wheel chronograph version, and in magnificent Haute Horlogerie masterpieces. The expression Classic Elegance refers to large or small timepieces with round cases, the traditional wristwatch shape. A watch is a jewellery piece, one of the few, in fact, available to men. Beyond its aesthetic or emotional value, however, a watch can also be an outward expression, a symbol, of the wearer's personality. Whether chronographs or ultra-thin watches equipped with automatic or hand-wound movements, all the timepieces in the Classic Elegance collection are distinguished by the refinement of their lines and dials. They are also suitable for any occasion and any age group. In other words, their style is "timeless". The term Sport Classique covers a general style of time-piece. It refers to watches with cases that are more technical in construction – for example the crown and back are screwed to ensure greater waterresistance – and have a sportier look due to their highly legible dials with luminescent numbers and hands. However, the definition cannot be too strict because some "sporty" models are unquestionably "elegant". A gold case on a hand-sewn full-skin crocodile strap, for example, cannot automatically be labeled as "sporty", even though the watch meets the criteria of legibility and water-resistance. In 1991, on the occasion of its 200th anniversary, the company achieved the amazing feat of adapting the technology of the Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges to a wristwatch version. Several variations have been produced since then. These watches, which are completely handmade in Girard-Perregaux's workshops, are amazing works of mechanical art, and the Three Bridges, which are cast in solid gold, are stunningly beautiful to behold. Some six to eight months of continuous work are needed to produce such a watch, with the House's most talented senior watchmakers meticulously crafting each component by hand, assembling the movement, testing the complicated mechanism and finally casing up the completed movement in a massive gold or platinum case. As of this writing, only 20 such Tourbillon wristwatches have been produced to date.
